Runkles is a pioneering archaeologist and expert on Texas archeology.  He conducted excavations at many important sites through-out Texas.  This type was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.
Garza Basal Notch
AKA: Soto (Phelps, 1968)

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a thin small triangular point with a flattened cross section.  The blade may vary from straight to recurvate, flaring at the basal edge.  The blade may vary from being serrated, to having small shallow notches or serrations on the middle third of the blade.  The base is concave with a center basal notch.  This point commonly has a high quality of workmanship, even though many examples are uni-facial.  This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 15 to 45 mm,  Basal Width - 9 to 18 mm
Commonly Utilized Material:
Most commonly locally available cherts and flints followed by obsidian.
Additional Comments:

This point is thought to be a variant of the Toyah point (Turner and Heater, 1985).

This points was named the Soto Point by Alan Phelps from the El Paso Archaeological Society in 1968. This name has occasionally been used for Garza points found in New Mexico and Chihuahua Mexico.

Pictures 1 and 3 are characteristic of the Revilla type. (collector sub-type).

This point is primarily found from the Tran Pecos and Big Bend regions of Texas, northward into Lamb and Bailey County Texas and west into Donna Ana and  Otero County New Mexico.  This point may be found into southwestern Oklahoma with decreased frequency.
