Richie was a prominent anthropologist who served as the state archaeologist for the State of New York, the State Museum and Science Service.  He excavated over 100 sites in the state of New York and published over 150 professional publications.  He named this type in a professional publication and this type has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.
Wading River Stemmed
Cluster: Lamoka Cluster
Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a small thick triangular stemmed point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade may range from excurvate to straight.  The shoulders are weak and at an upward angle.  The stem is straight with parallel sides.  The base may range from straight to convex.  This point lacks any basal grinding.  This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 28 to 38 mm (average 32 mm),  Stem Length - 8 to 12 mm (typically 1/3 to 1/2 of the total length),  Blade Width - 10 to 18 mm (average 15 mm),  Stem Width - 8 to 12 mm (average 10 mm)

The University of Minnesota has this cluster listed as a Durst Stemmed cluster, Justice (1987) lists this cluster as the Lamoka cluster.  This cluster has been listed as the Lamoka Cluster here.

Fogelman (1988) feels that these are re-sharpened Duncan Island points.

Custer (1996), feels that the bigger points are older than the smaller examples of this point.  However, many of the smaller points might be classified as a Wading River point which may be distinguished by being of smaller size and the lack of basal grinding (Ebright, 1992).

These points are found through out the White Clay Creek and Brandywine river valleys of Delaware and surrounding area.
