Richie was a prominent anthropologist who served as the state archaeologist for the State of New York, the State Museum and Science Service.  He excavated over 100 sites in the state of New York and published over 150 professional publications.  He named this type in a professional publication and this type has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a medium to large thick triangular expanding stem / side notch point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is narrow and may range from straight to excurvate.  The shoulders are pronounced and may vary from having an upward angle to being horizontal.  The shoulders are commonly asymmetrical.  The stem is expanding.  The base is primarily straight, but may be slightly concaved, or rarely slightly convex.  The base may have basal thinning.  This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements:

Length - 37 to 70 mm (averaging 42 to 50 mm),  Stem Length - 7 to 11 mm,  Width - 16 to 32 mm (average 24 mm),  Stem Width - 15 to 23 mm,  Neck Width - 10 to 18 mm,  Thickness - 5 to 10 mm
Commonly Utilized Material:
Most commonly quartz and quartzite and then rhyolite, argillite, and local cherts.
Additional Comments:

Richie (1971) feels that this point may be related to the Lamoka cluster and Brewerton points.  He feels that this point may be a Brewerton Side Notch variant.  It has also been suggested that this is an intermediate point between the Lamoka and Brewerton points.

Wanser (1982) notes the similarities between this point and the Clagett points and feels that the two might be variants of each other.

These points are found through out the Susquehanna River valley and Hudson River basin.  These points are reported into the Potomac River valley and into southeastern Ontario.
