Caldwell is a prominent anthropologist and professor for the Department of Anthropology at the University of Nebraska.  He completed his PhD at the University of Washington where he conducted studies into the archaeology of Washington.  Mallory was a distinguished archaeologist who worked for the Smithsonian conducting field studies.  This point was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a thick medium triangular expanding stem point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is broad and may vary from excurvate to straight.  The shoulders range from horizontal to slightly barbed.  The stem is expanding with a straight to slightly convex base.  This point has a random flaking pattern.  
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 45 to 75 mm,  Stem Length - 10 to 15 mm,  Blade Width - 25 to 38 mm,  Neck Width - 16 to 24 mm,  Stem Width - 19 to 27 mm.

This type was identified by Houart in 1971 based on examples from the Koster site. The points from that site were re-evaluated by Cook in 1976 who re-classified Helton points as Matanzas points identifying 5 variations of the Matanzas point. There are still professional references to this type, but some use Cooks classification and bypass the use of the Helton type.

This point is primarily found in the mid Mississippi River valley and into the Illinois River Valley, lower Ohio River Valley and Iowa River valley.  This point has been reported into Nebraska and Kansas.
