(Krieger misspelled the name of the town naming the point Cliffton instead of Clifton. Upon the discovery of this error, it was decided that the name Cliffton would be used instead of correcting the name )
Point Validity: Valid type

Krieger was a renowned anthropologist who spent most of his career in Texas cataloging projectile points and pottery in Texas before moving on to the University of Washington.  This type was named in a professional publication, but has been determined to be a preform for the Perdiz point.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a small triangular contracting stem point with a flattened cross section.  The blade may vary from straight to excurvate and typically asymmetrical.  The shoulders are well defined and may vary from horizontal to barbed.  The stem is short and contracting with a convex to pointed base.  This point is a crudely made point and commonly unifacial chipped and usually made out of a chip.  This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 20 to 40 mm,  Stem Length - 1 to 5 mm,  Width - 15 to 20 mm  (Suhm and Krieger, 1954).

It has been argued that this type has no validity and should be recognized as an unfinished Perdiz point (Turner and Hester, 1985). This type was also referred to as the Foyle Flake by Miller and Jelks in 1952. Both types are considered the same type and are viewed by many as a preform for the Perdiz type. This type was referred to as Ojo contracting stem by Walter W. Taylor (1966) based on his work in northeastern Mexico.

This point is primarily most commonly found in the Red River Valley of Texas, Oklahoma,  Arkansas and Louisiana.  The frequency decreased the further south, but is found into central Texas, the coastal region and into central Tamaulipas.
