Collector type
Converse is an avocational archaeologist who was instrumental in the formation of the Ohio Archaeological Society. He has written many books regarding the archaeology of the Ohio River valley and runs a artifact auction company. Elder is an archaeologist who has published many journal articles and books. This type is thought to represent point characteristics and not a unique type (see additional comments). This type has many collector type references, but limited professional references. This is considered a collector type.
Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a thick medium to large stemmed point. The cross section may vary from elliptical to having a median ridge. The blade is primarily excurvate, but may vary from straight to recurvate on re-sharpened examples. The shoulders may range from horizontal to having an upward slope. The stem is ranges from straight to slightly expanding. The base is commonly concave. Grinding is commonly seen on the hafting area and on the base on examples with a straight base. This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements:
Total Length - 45 to 120 mm (65 mm average), Stem Length - 8 to 13 mm (11 mm average), Blade Width - 24 to 36 mm (30 mm average), Stem Width - 15 to 20 mm (17 mm average), Thickness - 10 to 15 mm
Commonly Utilized Material:
cherts, hornstone, rhyolite
Additional Comments:
This type was named as a unique type by Elder's (1970). The type was further studied by Robert Converse in 1973 who identified the Heavy Duty Serrated type. Justice (1987) felt that this was a variant of the Kirk Stemmed point and included it as a morphological correlate to the Kirk Stemmed cluster. It is now believed that this is a characteristics of a Kirk Stemmed type point and not a true variant or a unique type. This is supported by the lack of any site in which the primary point found is the Heavy Duty type.
