Desert Redding Side Notch
AKA: Winitu Side Notch
Cluster: Desert Side Notch Cluster
Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a thin small to medium isosceles triangular side notch point with a flattened cross section.  The blade is primarily straight, but may vary to slightly excurvate or slightly incurvate.  This variant generally has smooth blades and lack any serrations.  Diagonal notches are well below the mid-point and are narrow and deep.  Points generally considered Winitu points have diagonal doglegged notches.  The shoulders may vary from having a slightly to a strong barb depending on the notch.  The stem is expanding.  The basal edges may range from being square to curving in towards the base.  The base may vary from deep concave to having a deep V-shaped.  This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 21 to 142 mm (average 25 to 40 mm),  Stem Length - 9 to 13 mm,  Blade Width - 12 to 35 mm,  Neck Width -6 to 18 mm,  Basal Width - 12 to 32 mm,  Thickness - 2 to 7 mm
Commonly Utilized Material:

Agates, cherts, obsidian, basalt, and rarely glass
Additional Comments:

This point is also referred to as a Winitu point after the Winitu culture who used the Desert Redding point.  Points made by the Winitu tend to have a deeper narrow dogleg notch, but it still falls into the characteristics of the Desert Redding type.

Martin A. Baumhoff and J.S. Byrne (1959) describes four subtypes to this point; Delta, General (Desert Classic), Redding, Sierra.
