Lathrap was an anthropologist and a professor at the University of Illinois.  He studied at the University of California – Berkeley before moving on to Harvard University.  Hoover is an anthropologist and retired as a professor at California Polytechnic State San Lois Obispo, California.  He now serves as a consultant in archaeology for the State of California.  This type was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a thin small isosceles triangular point with a flattened cross section.  The blade is primarily straight, but may vary to slightly excurvate to slightly incurvate.  Many examples have serrations on the blade.  The base is deeply concave, but may vary to slightly concave.  On examples with a slightly incurvate blade and a deeply concave base may have basal ears that are pointed downward.  This point has a random flaking pattern.

These points were originally called Shallow Tailed points by Waldo Wedel (1941) for points found at Buena Vista Lake, Kern County, California, but were renamed Canalino Shallow Tailed by Lathrap and Hoover in 1975 including the associated culture in the name.  Justice (2002) shortened the name to Canalino Triangular.
