Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Attica Chert ranges from a greenish gray to gray or blue-gray with occasional mottled or streaked with swirls of light to medium green.

Texture: Attica Chert is typically coarse grained, but occasionally have a finer grain

Luster: Dull to waxy

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Sponge spicules that are usually white but may range to dark gray

Heat Treatment:  Typically not heat treated

  Attica Chert is associated with the Muldraugh Formation of the Borden Group.  Primarily found in the Attica region of Indiana and throughout the Wabash river basin in west central Indiana.  It has been reported into eastern Iowa and Arkansas.  A primary outcropping was reported in St. Claire county, Illinois.
