Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Sugar Creek Chert is fairly homogenous and ranges in color from a bluish gray to olive gray variegated with white cloudy streaks.  A second variation occurs and ranges from a tan to a chocolate brown.   Occasionally quartz inclusions occur.

Fine grain

Luster:

Silica Fabrics / Fossils:

Patina: Light brown

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment produces a reddish gray color and increases the luster.

Sugar Creek Chert is associated with the Muldraugh Formation of the Borden Group.  Primary outcroppings along the banks of Sugar Creek in Montgomery and Boone County, Indiana.  Has also been reported in n  Clinton, Hamilton, Tippecanoe, and Hendricks Counties.
