Jelks was a distinguished anthropologist and helped organize the newly formed Department of Anthropology at Illinois State University where he was a Professor.  His work in Texas furthered the understanding of Texas archeology and was a founding force for the Society of Historical Archeology.  This point was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is a valid type.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a medium to very large triangular knife with a flattened to elliptical cross section.  The blade is excurvate.  The blade may vary from having a triangular form, to curving in at the tip with parallel sides, or curving in at the tip and curving back in at the base.  The base is primarily straight, but may vary from concave to straight.  The base is usually thinned with several broad thin flakes.  The workmanship of this knife is fine with a random flaking pattern.

This type is similar to the Covington Blade. This point has a concave to straight base while the Covington Knife has a convex base.
