Justice is a distinguished archaeologist and Assistant Director and Curator of Collections at Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology at Indiana University.  This point was named in his book on points of California and the Great Basin, and this type has several professional references.  This is considered a valid type.
Diablo Canyon Side Notch

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a narrow medium triangular side notch point with a flattened to elliptical cross section.  The blade may vary from excurvate to straight.  The shoulders range from horizontal to having an upward angle.  Wide U-shaped parallel notches enter the blade at a parallel to slightly diagonal placement which forms an expanded stem.  The base may vary from convex to straight.  Some examples have had a slightly convex base. Basal thinning may be seen on this point, but basal grinding is rarely present.  This point has a random flaking pattern.

This point is primarily found through out the southern and central California coastal regions and coastal ranges.  This point is found up to Sierra Nevada range and into the Mohave Desert.  This point has been reported into the Sierra Nevada's rarely.
