Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

This is a narrow medium triangular stemmed to expanding stem point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is narrow and excurvate to straight.  This point is commonly beveled and finely serrated.  Many examples have beveling only on one edge on each face of the point.  The shoulders may vary from horizontal to having an upward angle.  The stem is slightly expanding, but may vary to straight.  The base is most commonly convex and may have a fishtail appearance.  The stem is beveled (see additional comments) and lacks grinding or smoothing.  This point has a random flaking pattern.

Size Measurements:  Total Length - 40 to 80 mm,  Stem Length - 13 to 18 mm,  Blade Width - 19 to 26 mm,  Stem  Width at Narrowest - 14 to 19 mm,  Basal Width - 17 to 25 mm

This point is primarily found in central Texas and into the lower Pecos region and east into the Coastal Plains.  This point may be found into western Louisiana with decreased frequency.

Elton Prewitt (1981) identified these two types that had previously been included in the Darl type.  He describes the Mahomet type as having beveling on the stem that is on alternating edges and rarely have grinding or smoothing on the stem.  The Zephyr type is more steeply beveled than the Mahomet type (Turner and Hester, 1999).
