Packard Lanceolate
AKA: Eastern Agate Basin
Cluster: Plano Lanceolate Cluster
Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a medium to large long slender lanceolate point with an median ridge or diamond cross section. The blade is excurvate with the widest part of the blade being the midpoint or slightly above the midpoint. The base may vary from slightly concave to straight with rounded basal corners. Heavy basal grinding is present on the hafting regions, but this point lacks any basal thinning. This point has a transverse parallel flaking patter with flaks terminating at the midline of the blade.
Size Measurements:
Length - 63 to 128 mm, Width -22 to 32 mm, Basal Width - 10 to 20 mm, Thickness - 6 to 10 mm (Based on few examples and measurements of Agate Basin points from this area).
Commonly Utilized Material:
Additional Comments:
This point is similar to the Agate Basin points which has led to the nickname "Eastern Agate Basin". However, these points differ from the Agate Basin type in that these points are thicker with a median ridge which forms a diamond shaped cross section which is not seen in the Agate Basin type (Emerson et al, 2012).
Distribution:
Distribution Comments:
This point is primarily found in north eastern Oklahoma and into the western Ozark Mountains and James River Basin of Missouri,

Age Details:
Three AMS Radiocarbon dates from the strata containing Packard points from the Packard site provided dates of 9,880 +/- 90 BCYBP, 9,830 +/- 70 BCYBP, and 9,770 +/- 70 BCYBP. A fourth (believed to be contaminated) provided a date of 9,416 +/- 193 BCYPB (10,695 B.P.) The first three provide a date of 11,230 - 11,190 B.P. (Wyckoff, 1984)
