Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a medium triangular expanding stem point with an elliptical cross section. The blade is
primarily excurvate. The blade lacks any beveling, but may be serrated. The shoulders are primarily slightly barbed, but may
range to horizontal. The stem is expanding. The base bas a center V and round up towards the basal corners forming a
recurvate shape. This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements: Total Length - 50 to
70 mm, Stem Length - 19 to 28 mm, Blade Width - 25 to 35 mm,
Neck Width - 15 to 22 mm, Stem Width - 24 to 36 mm (**Based on
small sample size pictured by Farr 2006***)
Distribution:
Distribution Comments:
This point is primarily found in the Wacissa, Suwannee, and Santa Fe River valleys. The full distribution of this point is still un-known. Farr (2006) places the
distribution of this point as the upland and flood plains of Florida. This point may be found in the Gulf Coastal Region.
Additional Comments:
This type has been proposed by Grayal Farr (2006). This point is similar to the Bolen type with a recurve base, however this point is not associated with other Bolen type points and has associations
with Hardaway and Kirk type points. Unlike Bolen type points, this point is not beveled. Also, the stem tends to be longer than the shorter stemma commonly seen on Bolen type points (excluding Bolen
Extended Notch points). The exact age of this point is still under debate. Lithic associations in the Norden Site places this point in the transitional Paleo to Early Archaic based on the descriptions
given by Smith Et Al (1997). Examples and information presented to Ripley Bullen led him to type this type point as a Hardaway Side Notch and gave a temporal placement of Transitional Paleo. Personal
communications between Farr and Anderson and Meeks in 2006 led Anderson and Meeks to place this type as a transitional point between the Kirk Corner Notch type and other Bifurcated types and giving this a temporal
placement of Early Archaic. Farr's personal communications with Daniel (2006) led Daniel to place this point as a transitional point between the Hardaway Side Notch (as thought by Bullen) and later Kirk
Corner Notch points giving it a temporal placement of Transitional Paleo to Early Archaic. In 1964, Alvin Hendrix called this point the River Tom point after a local collector in his identification guide to
Florida Points (Farr, 2006).
