Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

Additional Comments:
Baumhoff identified the Shasta Complex points after the Shasta Reservoir region of northern California.  These points are commonly associated with the Yana culture.  This type was named Sutter Contracting Stem by Dougherty (1990) for variations at the Sutter Site, Sutter County, California.  This type has been called Rough River for examples found in the Rogue River Valley in southeastern Oregon.

This type overlaps the characteristics if points from the Rosegate cluster.  The time frame is thought to have started during the time that Rosegate type points were being used, and continued into the same time period as the Desert Cluster.  This cluster differs from points in the Rosegate cluster based on metric attributes including the contracting stem and the exaggerated barbed, but based on temporal placement, these points may be part of the Rosegate cluster  (Hughes, 1986).

Many examples found in Mendocino County are difficult to distinguish from Rattlesnake points.  The name Gunthersnake has been termed for these type points (Justice, 2002).

Dennis Cassinelli (1996) has classified these points as: Abrupt Shoulder, Round Shoulder, and Short Barb

Distribution Comments:
