Sayles was a pioneering field archaeologist who conducted one of the first archaeological surveys of Texas.  He was the co-founder of the Texas Archaeological Society.  This type was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.
Gila River Barbed

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a small to medium triangular stemmed point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade may vary from slightly excurvate, straight, or slightly incurvate and is deeply serrated.  The serrations are generally symmetrical and start deep towards the base and become finer towards the tip.  The blade is narrow, and usually has a width that is the same as the thickness of the blade.  The shoulders are commonly barbed, but may range to horizontal.  The stem may vary from straight to expanding.  This point has a random flaking pattern.

These points have been subdivided into Triangular, Stemmed, and Side Notch. Another variant is the Gila River which has been referred to as the Snaketown Barbed (Justice, 2002).

These points have been referred to as Gila Butte points (Hranicky, 2011) which is the phase that they are associated with and not the formal name of the type.

Justice (2002) discusses a Gila River Corner Notch which is similar to the Salt River point, but has a straight base where the Salt River has a concave base. This is not the same point as Justice's Gila River point.

This point is primarily found at the Snaketown Site and the surrounding region.  This point has been found along the Agua Fria River and has been found as far north as the Beardsley Canal site.
