Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a broad medium to large ovoid blade with an elliptical cross section. The blade is excurvate, curving in at the tip and curving back in towards the base. The base is primarily convex, but some examples have a straight or pointed base. Basal and hafting region grinding is absent on this point. This point has a random flaking pattern. The blade is commonly beveled as a result of re-sharpening the blade.
Size Measurements:
Total Length - 39 to 190 mm (average 70 to 85 mm), Blade Width - 20to 49 mm (average 28 to 34 mm), Thickness - 5 to 12 mm.
Commonly Utilized Material:
The most commonly used material is
obsidian and
basalt followed by locally available materials. Heat treatment is not used for this type.
Additional Comments:
This type appears to be a mixture of large Cascade types. Cascade type artifacts were used as both points and knives. The key distinguishing factor that has been used to classify a Cascade into this type is the size of the blade and the re-sharpening technique if removing short steep flakes from the blade leaving the blade beveled. Large examples that have not been re-sharpened would then classified into their true type which makes this classification problematic.
