Synmes is a distinguished anthropologist who has greatly furthered our knowledge of Canadian archaeology.  This type was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a thin medium triangular to lanceolate side notch point with a thin elliptical cross section.  The blade is excurvate with the tip curving in towards the tip and curving back in towards the shoulders.  Blades nay vary to straight in some examples.  Parallel notches are broad and enter low on the blade forming weak shoulders that are at an upward angle and an expanding stem.  The base may vary from straight to slightly concave.  This point is commonly well made and has a random flaking pattern. 
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 26 to 67 mm,  Stem Length - 4 to 7 mm,  Blade Width - 11 to 26 mm,  Neck Width - 8 to 13 mm

Peck (2011) notes that large Samantha points would fall into this type. He states that many Sonota points are typed as both Besant and Samantha points.

Everitt et al. (1996) state that the Sonota Culture is a sub-culture of the Besant culture and that these points may be found in association with Besant points, but are more common in the southern distribution (See Distribution Comments).

Deep Water Creek is a name that is used by collector's for this type of points that are found in North Dakota and into Montana. There are no professional references to the Deep Water Creek Projectile Point.

These points are most commonly found in the southern region of the Besant culture that is associated with the Sonota culture (red).  This point may be found in the same distribution as the Besant type with decreased frequency (yellow).
