Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

This is a thick, short, "squatty" triangular side notch point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is primarily excurvate, but may vary to straight.  Small shallow notches enter the side of the preform forming a shoulder that is at a slight upward angle and a expanding stem.  The base has a shallow center V or U shaped notch that is commonly slightly off center.  These points are commonly crudely made and have a random flaking pattern.

Distribution Comments:

Currently no sites have been found that only contain Sandy Creek points.  They are most commonly found with Sonora and Besant points and may represent stylistic differences of Sonota and Besant points.  They may have the same distribution as other Besant variations such as the Bratton.

Similar Points:
Related / Associated Points:
Besant, Oxbow, Sonota
Additional Comments:

Reeves (1983) felt that these point represented a transition between the later Oxbow points and the newer Besant points. These points are coevals with the Pelican lake points.

Some of the older assemblages contain points with slightly deeper basal concavities, previously called Sandy Creek points.

Sandy Creek point style with the limited samples available should be placed within Besant type.
