Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

This is a small triangular to lanceolate projectile point with a thin elliptical cross section.  The blade is excurvate with the tip curving in, becoming widest between the midsection and at the bottom third of the point, and curving back in towards the base.  The blade is occasionally serrated.  The base may vary from straight to slightly concave and bi-facially thinned.  This point has a random flaking pattern.

Size Measurements:  Total Length - 20 to 40 mm,  Blade Width - 10 to 18 mm

This point is primarily found in the lower Arkansas Red River basin and into the lower Mississippi River basin (see additional comments below).

Shetley points are most commonly associated with the lower Arkansas / Red river and lower Mississippi River basin, especially Oklahoma and into Arkansas, Missouri, and Mississippi.  However in literature, there have been references to this type, generally in comparison to other types, in the Tennessee River Basin and in New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and the Ohio River basin.

Bell was a professor of anthropology and Museum Curator in Oklahoma and did extensive work at the Spiro Mounds.  Wyckoff is a distinguished anthropologist and professor for the Department of Anthropology at the University of Oklahoma.  He has conducted extensive studies into the archaeology of Oklahoma and specializes in the archaeology of the Caddoan culture.  This type was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.
