Oauchita Projectile Point



Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

This is a large broad ovoid basal notch point with a flattened cross section.  The blade is broad and excurvate with the tip curving in and curving back in at the shoulders.  The shoulders are barbed and have a drooping appearance.  The stem is narrow and straight with a straight base.  This point has a random flaking pattern.

Size Measurements:  Total Length - 70 to 200 mm,  Stem Length - 14 to 20

This point is primarily found in the Ouachita River basin of Arkansas and Louisiana and the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and into Oklahoma.  This point is found into northeastern Texas.

Additional Comments:

A similar point to the Ouachita type point, the Little River has a wider stem (approx. 1/3 wider) with  rounded barbs generally extend to the base.  The outer edge of the barb is generally straighter than the Ouachita point.  The stem on the Ouachita point is narrower and pointed barbs that extend approx. half the length of the stem and the outer edge of the barb curves in towards the base.
