Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

This is a thin medium triangular side notch point with a thin elliptical cross section.  The blade is primarily straight and is long and narrow.  Notches are parallel and u-shaped forming a horizontal shoulders and expanded stem.  The base is straight to slightly concave.  This point is commonly well made and has a random flaking pattern.    

Size Measurements:  Total Length - 35 to 56 mm,  Stem Length - 7 to 9 mm,  Blade Width - 10 to 17 mm,  Neck Width - 6 to 8 mm,  Stem Width - 9 to 17 mm

This point is primarily associated with the southern populations of the Fremont Culture. (bottom half of the red area), however it has been argued that this point is found further into the northern populations of the Fremont culture.

This point is similar to the Uinta Side Notch found further north in Utah, except that this point is generally longer and narrower than the Uinta point (Justice, 2002).  This point is similar to Basketmaker type points found into Arizona, New Mexico, and into Mexico.  Holmer and Weder felt that this type may be related to these types, but Justice (2002) feels that this type is technologically related to northern type points.

Holmer was a well-respected pioneering anthropologist who as a driving force at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Utah.  Weder is a distinguished anthropologist who has conducted extensive studies on Great Basin anthropology and serves as president for the Utah Statewide Archaeological Society.  This type was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.
