Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

This is a medium triangular expanding stem point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is primarily excurvate.  Wide notches enter low on the blade forming a shoulder that is at a slight upward angle.  The stem is expanding and is commonly slightly narrower than the blade.  The base ranges from straight to slightly concave with rounded basal corners.  This point has a random flaking pattern.

Size Measurements:  Length - 26 to 60 mm (average 35 to 45 mm), Stem Length - 7 to 10 mm,  Blade Width - 19 to 25 mm, Basal Stem Width - 14 to 20 mm,  Neck Width - 10 to 16 mm

Distribution Comments:

This is a variation of the Bitterroot Side Notch.  Distribution includes northern Idaho, western Montana, and into southern Alberta, southeastern British Columbia, and southern Saskatchewan.  Peck (2011) notes that these points have not been reported in Wyoming.  This variation may not have the full distribution of the Bitterroot type.

Radiocarbon dates of  6,100 +/- 70 and 6,195 +/- 45 at the Stampede site, 5,715 +/- 150 and 5,370 +/- 170 at the Mona Lisa site, and 5,800 +/- 80 at EgPn87 (Peck, no date)
