Point Validity:
Valid type
Bullen was a distinguished anthropologist and Curator Emeritus of the Florida Museum of Natural History. He was dedicated to identifying and typing projectile points from Florida. This point was named in a professional publication and is professionally a widely recognized type. This is a valid type.
Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a thick small to medium (1 to 3 inches) stemmed point with a rhomboid cross section. The blade is primarily straight, but some examples may have a slightly excurvate blade or an incurvate to recurvate blade on re-sharpened examples. The blade commonly has a right side beveling. Examples that have not been re-sharpened will not be beveled and are commonly referred to as Hardee Plain. The shoulders may vary from horizontal to having an upward angle. The stem may range from straight to slightly contracting. The base is commonly straight, but may be slightly convex to slightly concave. This point is comprised of random coarsely broad percussion flaking with fine pressure flaking on the right edge.
Size Measurements:
Total Length - 25 to 80 mm (typically 50 to 60 mm), Stem Length - 10 to 15 mm, Blade Width - 25 to 40 mm, Stem Width - 15 to 22 mm, Thickness - 5 to 10 mm
Commonly Utilized Material:
Heat treated agatiized coral and cherts
Additional Comments:
James Gray (1975) identifies a second variant of this point he called the Gibson Serrated type (Hardee Type II) named after Jim Gibson who's collection the type was identified from. These points are thin finely made points with fine serrations on the blade. This type also has the right side beveling. The shoulders tend to be more angular and broader on this variant (Lloyd Schroder, 2012 W18).
Distribution:
Distribution Comments:
The Type I (Hardee Beveled) is primarily found from Marion County to the Withlacoochee River. The Type II (Gibson) have the heaviest concentrations in the Tampa region and into the surrounding counties.
