Jelks was a distinguished anthropologist and helped organize the newly formed Department of Anthropology at Illinois State University where he was a Professor.  His work in Texas furthered the understanding of Texas archeology and was a founding force for the Society of Historical Archeology.  This point was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is a valid type.


Godley Expanding Stem

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a small to medium triangular expanding stem point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is narrow and primarily straight, but may range to slightly excurvate.  Some examples have an extremely narrow blade giving the point a spike appearance.  The shoulders are prominent and most commonly at an upward angle.  The stem is expanding and generally narrower than the shoulders.  The base is smooth and convex and commonly has nodular cortex.  The stem is commonly ground and many examples have beveling on the stem, but the blade is never beveled.  This point has a random flaking pattern.

Forrester (1964) subdivided this type into two variations, the Klondike and Kimball variation. However, these names never received much usage.
