Point Validity: Valid type

Bullen was a distinguished anthropologist and Curator Emeritus of the Florida Museum of Natural History.  He was dedicated to identifying and typing projectile points from Florida.  This point was named in a professional publication and is professionally a widely recognized type.  This is a valid type.
Columbia Stemmed
Cluster: Lowe / Steuben Cluster
Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

This is a thick medium to large (2.5 to 5 inches) expanding stem point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is narrow and primarily excurvate, but may vary to straight.  The shoulders may vary from horizontal to having an upwards slope.  Many examples have a weak shoulder.  The stem is short and slightly expanding and slightly narrower than the shoulders.  The base is primarily straight, but may range from slightly convex to slightly concave.  This point has a random flaking pattern and is commonly well made.
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 50 to 100 mm (average 60 to 70 mm),  Stem Length - 13 to 20 mm,  Blade Width - 24 to 35 mm,  Basal Width - 22 to 33 mm,  Neck Width - 15 to 25 mm,  Thickness - 7 to 10 mm
Commonly Utilized Material:
Additional Comments:

This point is similar to the Taylor point, which may be a re-sharpened Columbia point which has a shorter blade (Granger and Granger, 2013). These points have many of the characteristics of the Lowe points of the same age found in the Ohio River Valley and into the Tennessee River Valley.

This point is similar to the Sarasota point. Bullen (1975) notes that the biggest difference between the two types are the ratio of the blade width to the stem width (at shoulder). The shoulder is broader on the Sarasota with blade to stem ratio or 1.8:1 to 1.5:1 (the stem is roughly 50% of the blade width). The Columbia has a blade to stem width ratio of 1.2:1 to 1.3:1 (roughly 80% of the blade width).
