Point Validity: Valid type

Information regarding Powell is limited.  He named this point in his book on projectile points of the Gulf Region and followed that up with an article in the Central States Archaeological Journal (1992) Vol 39-40.  This point has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.
Chipola Auriculated
Cluster: Dalton Cluster
Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a small to medium triangular side notch point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is primarily excurvate with many examples curving in at the shoulders edge giving the point a rounded shoulder.  The shoulders are at an upward angle.  The stem is expanding with a concave base.  This forms diagonal downward angled or drooping ears or auricles.  The base is commonly thinned and has hafting region grinding.  This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements:
Total Length - 40 to 76 mm (average 55 to 65 mm),  Stem Length - 13 to 18 mm,  Blade Width - 18 to 38 mm (average 25 mm),  Stem Width - 18 to 30 mm,  Waist Width - 15 to 25 mm,  Basal Concavity - 4 to 10 mm.

Additional Comments:

This point is similar to the San Patrice point found in Texas and surrounding region. It has been proposed that both the San Patrice and Chipola evolved from the Gulf Coastal Plains tradition with the San Patrice to the west and Chipola to the east (Farr, 2006). This point may represent an extension of the San Patrice type. This point is similar to the Dalton Greenbrier and the Hardaway points. This point tends to have a more angular shoulder or the junction where the auricle and the blade meets (W18). Powell (1990) suggests that this may represent a form between the Dalton and Hardaway points.
