Name Details:
Identified By:  Ralph Allen Jr.
Named For:
Date Identified:  1989
Type Site:  Boggy Branch Creek, Henry County, Alabama
Point Validity: Valid type

Allen conducted extensive archaeological studies around Alabama.  This point was named in a professional publication and has many professional publications.  This is considered to be a valid type.
Boggy Branch Type I
Cluster:
Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a medium to large (2.5 to 4.5 inches) triangular expanding stem point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is serrated and may vary from excurvate when new and incurvate or recurvate (curving in at the tip and flaring out at the shoulders) when heavily re-sharpened.  Heavy re-sharpening forms steep edges.  The shoulders may range from barbed to having an upward angle.  The shoulders are reduced with heavy re-sharpening.  Many examples have weak shoulders.  The stem may vary from slightly expanding to expanding with a convex base.  The basal corners are rounded giving the stem a bulbous appearance.  Hafting region grinding is commonly present.  This point has a random flaking pattern.
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 57 to 120 mm,  Stem Length - 15 to 36 mm (average 24 mm),  Blade Width - 22 to 41 mm (25 mm average**),  Stem Width - 20 to 32 mm
Commonly Utilized Material:

Coastal Plain Chert and local materials
Additional Comments:

Two variants have been identified for this type.  The Type 1 has a longer rounded stem and the Type 2 has a shorter flattened stem.  This point is thought to be a variant of the Big Slough type point (Granger and Granger, 2013).

**  The degree of steep edges and serrations suggest that these have been heavily re-sharpened.  It has been questioned if thee points are other types that have had the blade reduced changing the overall characteristics of the point.  Because of this, blade widths may extend beyond this range in points without the heavy degree of re-sharpening.
Distribution:
Distribution Comments:
