Ramah Chert

Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Ramah Chert ranges from a light gray to a frosted white with parallel black bands, black iron inclusions, and orange rust spots commonly present.  Rarely will be solid black or solid white.

Texture:
 Course to medium grain

Luster: Glassy luster with a slick appearance

Translucency:  Semi-translucent

Ramah Chert is associated with the Ramah Group of Labrador and Newfoundland.  This formation extends from the Saglek Bay through Ramah Bay and to Nachvak Fjord with the highest quality material coming from Ramah Bay.  Lower quality material also occur in Mugsford Bay.  Quarries also occur in Nain, Davis Inlet, Hopedale, Happy Valley Goose Bay,  Strait of Belle Isle, Labrador City, in the Torngat Mountains Nation Park of Newfoundland and Labrador (red).  This material has been recovered at archeological sites in Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Maine (yellow).
