Akmalik Chert is associated with the Lisburne Group of the central to west central Brooks range.  It is found in lenses and nodules in Killik River valley and throughout the central to west central Brooks Range, Alaska.  A narrow band extends from the foothills of the Okpikruak River of the Endicott Mountains westward to the Kukpowruk River and from No Luck Lake and the Nuka River to the upper Utukok River.

The Listburne Group has four formations listed as producing chert.  The Alapah Formation, and the Wahoo Formation which outcrops throughout the Brooks Range and into the Yukon, and the Waschsmuth Formation and the Kuna Formation which outcrops in the Brooks Range.
