Archeological Details:

Material Type:
Local

Cultural Period used:
Virginia Beach Jasper was primarily used during the Archaic period when ocean levels were lower and there was better access to the material

Primary use
Smaller projectile points

Geological Formation Details:
The Tabb Formation is a layer of ancient deposits consisting of sand, silt, cobble, and boulders.  It contains float deposits from other formations from the Blue Ridge and Piedmont which the Dan River has deposited downstream.  Further up the Dan River these nodules are large, but by the time they make it to the Chesapeake Bay, they are primarily pebbles.  These pebbles consist of chert, quartz, quartzite, and jasper.
