Tomstown Chert is associated with the Tomstown Dolomite Formation of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.  Occurs as beds and nodules with primary exposures occurring near Tomstown, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, at the east foot of Catoctin Mountain west / southwest of Frederick, Maryland, a meander belt running from Washington County, Maryland running to the Shenandoah River in Clark County, Maryland, and in Jefferson County, West Virginia.  Grades into the Shady Dolomite Formation to the west.
