Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color: Spring Branch Rhyolite is a light bluish gray but may vary to a tan with abundant small pyrite or feldspar crystals.  Banding is very light on freshly fractures surfaces, but becomes more apparent in weathered surfaced.

Fine grain

Luster:  Dull

Translucency:  Opaque 

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Abundant small pyrite or feldspar crystal inclusions

Patina: White or tan

Spring Branch Rhyolite is associated with the Persimmon Fork Formation occurring at the point of contact between this formation and the Richtex Formation mudstones.  This occurs as beds with primary exposures occurring in Saluda County, South Carolina around Faulkner Mountain.
