Color:
Peernal Chert (agate) ranges from a
white to pearly gray with a black banding occurring towards the bottom
of the formation and changing in color to a translucent yellow, pink,
and red with spots of white or pearly gray. Dendritic and
amorphous discoloration rages from black to red, blue, and yellow.
Texture: Fine grain
Luster: Vitreous

Pedernal Chert is associated with the Pedernal Chert Member of the
Abiquiu Tuff Formation of New Mexico. Primary exposures occur on
the San Pedro Mountain about 7 miles south of Gallina, New Mexico and on
the slopes of Cerro Pedernal in the Charma Valley in northern New
Mexico.
