Montoya Chert is associated with the Montoya Formation of the Delaware Basin of New Mexico and west Texas.  Primary outcroppings occur in the Florida Mountains, Luna County, New Mexico, in the Basin and Range providence, Victorio Mountains, summit of Lone Mountain, Silver City Range, Treasure Mountains, Bear Creek, and the Sacramento Mountains of Otero County, New Mexico.  Most commonly exposed on the eastern slopes of mountain ranges where sedimentary rocks are exposed.
