Luta Chert is associated with the Luta Limestone Member of the Winfield Formation of central to southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma.  Primarily occurs as nodular chert concretions along Luta Creek, a tributary of Antelope Creek, Marion County, Kansas.  The Winfield Formation was originally this was called the Marion Flint Formation for exposures near Marion, Marion County, Kansas, but was re-named Winfield Formation due to the overuse of the Marion name.  It was named Winfield for exposures near Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas.
