Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Indian Creek chert ranges in color from beige to buff or tan with browns occasionally being present.  Variegated shades of dark grays or purplish grays may be present.

Texture: 
Course grain

Luster: Waxy to a silky sheen with heat treatment

Silica Fabrics / Fossils:

Patina: Patina can range from darker browns to reddish or pinkish colors.

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment results in reddish, grayish pink, grayish lavender, and darkening of grays.  The luster is improved with heat treatment.

Knapping:

It is believed to be associated with the Ste. Genevieve Limestone formations along Indian Creek and Richland Creek in Greene, Monroe, and Lawrence County, Indiana.  Other outcroppings occur in southeast Owen, Martin, Orange, and western Washington counties, Indiana.
