Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Fremont Chert ranges in color including red, pink, purple, buff, brown, yellow, gray, blue, and white.  Mottling, banding, speckles, and veins may be present.  Geode nodules with translucent bluish white, red, and yellow chalcedony and quartz occurs as well as nodules of pure brilliant white.

Texture:
Fine grain

Luster:  Waxy to vitreous

Translucency:  Opaque to semi-translucent

Fremont Chert is associated with the Fremont Formation of Colorado occurring as abundant nodules, lenses, and beds.  High chalcedonic quality material occurs in Specimen Hill, Fremont County, also outcrops near Canyon City (Canon City), Fremont County, Priest Canyon to Cemetery Park in Pueblo and Fremont counties of the Denver Basin, South Hardscrabble Creek, Phantom Canyon, Fremont County, and Oil Creek, Fremont County, Colorado.
