Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Flint Hills Chert have a wide range of colors including shades of blue and gray, whites, and browns.  Banding may be present.

Texture:
 Fine grain

Luster: Highly vitreous

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Fossiliferous including echinoderms, bryazoans, and cup coral

Patina:

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment produces colors of bright red to pink

Flint Hills Chert is associated with the Florence Limestone Member of the Barnestone Formation, Permian Group.  Primary outcroppings are found throughout the Flint Hills.  This is an exotic material reported at sites in Nebraska, South Dakota and Colorado.
