Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Crescent Chert ranges from a brilliant white to a icy blue and commonly has banding of darker colors.  A variation often referred to as Colorful Crescent Chert ranges from a light pink with banding or reds and oranges.

Luster: Waxy to vitreous

Heat Treatment:  Heat treatment has little effect on the color, but the luster and flaking quality improves.

Primary quarries are in southern St. Louis county and northern Jefferson County, Missouri.  Large quantities of Crescent Chert was found at the Cahokia site in Illinois.
