Description of Physical Characteristics:

Color:  Accomack Mudstone ranges in color from a light or medium brown to a yellowish mustard brown.

Texture: 
Ranges from a high quality fine grain to lower quality course grain

Luster: Dull

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Marine fossils are commonly present.  They include clams, shrip, crabs and oysters.  Tube like burrows are often present.

Heat Treatment:

Accomack Mudstone appear to be associated with the off shore Yorktown and Omar formation estuarine deposits.  Primary outcroppings occur off the coast of eastern Virginia.  Highest concentrations occur in Accomack and Northampton counties in Virginia.
