Powell has served a curator of an archaeological museum and as an instructor of archaeology. He published a book on classification of blades and point in the Gulf Coastal region. This point was identified in his book. Professional references to this type are limited. The University of Florida mentions this type in regard to Duval points, but beyond that extent. There are many collector references to this type. This is considered a provisional type.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a small (1 to 2 inches) triangular contracting stem point with an elliptical cross section. The blade is primarily straight, but may vary to incurvate on examples that have been re-sharpened. The shoulders range from slightly barbed to having a slight upward angle. The shoulders May become reduced with re-sharpening. The stem is slightly contracting. The base varies from straight to convex with rounded basal corners. This point has a random flaking pattern.

This point is thought to be a variant of the Duvall type. These point are commonly re-sharpened which many give the point a spike like appearance (Granger and Granger, 2013).
Schroder (2012) reports that this point was originally called the Cooley point by Bullen for examples seen in Brad Colley's collection. The point was renamed Weeden Island after the associated culture. Son Anderson refers to these points as Safety Harbor Stemmed points
