Haury is a distinguished anthropologist who’s work enhanced our understanding and knowledge of southwestern archeology. He excavated many important sites, but is most noted for his work at Snaketown (a Hohokam site) in Arizona. This type was named in a professional publication and has many professional references. This is considered a valid type.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a small to medium triangular stemmed point with an elliptical cross section. The blade may vary from straight to slightly excurvate. The shoulders are primarily horizontal or slightly barbed, but may become reduced and take on an upward angle or become weak on re-sharpened examples. The stem may range from slightly expanding to slightly contracting. Many examples have a long stem being one third to one half the length of the point. The basal corners are rounded with a straight or slightly convex base. This point has a random flaking pattern.

These points were originally called Amargosa Type 1 points and then were re-named Amargosa-Ventana points after the red sand level of Ventana Cave which was called the Amargosa-Ventana 1 level by Haury. This points is still referred to as the Amargosa Type 1 point in some publications (Stone, 1986, Brown, 1982).

This point is most commonly associated with Arizona, but may be found throughout the Southwestern region and into the southern Colorado Plateau and into Chihuahua Mexico and Sonora Mexico.

These points were found in association with the red sand levels of Ventana Cave between the volcanic levels and the Talus levels. The red sand level was originally dated as Early Archaic by Haury with the volcanic levels being dated as Paleo. These dates have since been re-examined and determined to represent an Early Archaic period for the volcanic levels and a Middle Archaic for the red sand level
