Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

This is a small triangular corner notch point with a thin elliptical cross section.  The blade may vary from slightly excurvate to straight.  Many examples have fine serrations on the blade.  Broad round diagonal notches enter the corner of the preform forming a shoulder that is barbed and an expanding stem.

Distribution Comments:
Full distribution is not known.  Above distribution is based on the distribution of the Sorter's Bluff site, Copperhead Site, and and Anderson Shelter which are the confirmed sites that have had these points.  This type may extend to the same distribution as the similar Sallisaw or Scallorn points.

Additional Comments:

This type was originally typed as Scallorn type points by Wood and Brock in 1984 before being re-defined as Sorter's Bluff points by Perino in 1986.

These points are similar to the Sallisaw points in the characteristics of the stem and base.  They differ from Sallisaw points in the articles being longer and the total width of the stems is narrower than seen in Sallisaw point.  The stem of the Sorter's Bluff points is commonly narrower than the width of the blade at the shoulders and have a shallower basal concavity (Hill and Gilliland, 2005).

Point Validity:    Provisional Type

Perino was a well-respected self-taught archeologist who was the founder of the Illinois State Archeological Society.  This point was named in a professional publication.  William G. Hill  and J. Eric Gilliland (2005) provided additional description for this type based on examples from the Copperhead Site in Arkansas.  No additional professional references were located.  This is considered a provisional type.
