Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:

This is a medium (1.25 to 2.75 inches) contracting stem point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is primarily straight, but may vary from slightly excurvate to slightly incurvate.  The shoulders range from weak and at an upward angle to horizontal. The stem is contracting with a convex to straight base.  This point is often crudely made and has a random flaking pattern.

Size Measurements:  Total Length - 22 to 88 mm (average  45 to 55 mm),  Stem Length - 8 to 23 mm (average 12 to 14 mm),  Blade Width - 20 to 59 mm (average 28 to 32 mm),  Stem Width - 9 to 24 mm (average 19 mm at shoulders and 13 mm at base),  Thickness - 5 to 10 mm (Whatley, 2002)

Additional Comments:

Whatley (2002) suggest that these point followed the Savannah River type points.

Schroder (W18),  notes that large examples of this type may be difficult to distinguish from Putnam type points.

Whatley (2002) notes that these points are similar to the Ottare points found in the Piedmont of North Carolina, South Carolina, and into Georgia.  However the Ottare point has a square base while the Kiokee has a rounded contracting base.  These points are similar and difficult to distinguish from Morrow Mountain type points.  However, these points are most commonly associated with the Kiokee Creek region and are crudely made.  This is one of the major differences between many of the contracting stem points found in the area,
