Athapaskan Contracting Stem

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a small to medium triangular stemmed point with an elliptical to median ridge cross section.  The blade may vary from slightly excurvate to slightly incurvate.  The shoulders are primarily at an upward angle, but may vary to horizontal.  The stem is contracting with a convex base.  This point has a random flaking pattern.   
Size Measurements:

Total Length - 21 to 42 mm,  Stem Length - 8 to 13 mm,  Blade Width - 7 to 18 mm.

The development of this point is thought to be one of the earliest indicators of the Athapaskan Culture in Alaska (Reynolds and Jordan, 1982).  The Kamloops Side Notch is a later point also used by the Athapaskan Culture and more associated with Athapaskan territories in Canada

This point is found in the Athapaskan territories of Alaska and into the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alberta and into the Chilcotin Plateau of British Columbia.  This point is generally associated with the northern region of the Athapaskan territory (full Athapaskan territory not shown on the map above)
