Hillsborough Contracting Stem
AKA: Batwing (collectors)
Cluster: Newnan Cluster
Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a thin medium to large (1.25 to 4.25 inches) triangular point with a contracting stem. The cross section for this point is flattened to thin elliptical. The blade may vary from straight to excurvate. The shoulders generally have a downward angle and may extend down below the base. The stem is small and contracting with a convex to pointed base. Occasionally the base is straight. This point has a random flaking pattern and commonly has a high quality of workmanship.

Additional Comments:
Most researchers since Bullen has viewed the Newnan and the Hillsborough as variants of the same point type (Farr, 2006). The Hillsborough type has a smaller narrower stem while the Newnan type has a wider stem (Granger and Granger, 2013).
Bullen (1975) distinguished the Hillsborough from the Newnan point based on the stem. The Newnan point has a more "squarish" stem than is seen on the Hillsborough point. However, he does list this as a presumably extreme variant of the Newnan point
This point has been called the Batwing point by local collectors
