Oliver is a distinguished anthropologist and serves as the North Carolina State Archaeologist.  This type was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a small to medium (1 to 1.8 inches) triangular expanding stem point with an elliptical cross section.  The blade is excurvate.  The shoulders are well defined and may range from having an upward angle (most common) to horizontal.  The stem is primarily straight with a straight to slightly convex base.  This point has a random flaking pattern. 
Size Measurements:

Length - 28 to 50 mm, Width 17 to 29 mm, Thickness - 6 to 10 mm.

This type is thought to have followed the stemmed tradition of the Piedmont. The Savannah River which transitioned into the Savannah River Small and then into the Gypsy type. This type may have represented local cultures transitioning the stemmed traditional of the Archaic cultures into the new technologies of the bow and arrow (Oliver, 1999).

This type is similar to the older Otarre type and may be difficult to distinguish the two types.
