Clewlow was a well-respected anthropologist from the University of California who conducted extensive excavations and surveys within the Great Basin.  This type was named in a professional publication and has many professional references.  This is considered a valid type.

Description of Physical Characteristics and Flaking Pattern:
This is a small to medium crescent shaped knife with an elliptical to plano-convex cross section.  The blade is excurvate on one edge and incurvate on the other edge   They may have the shape of a crescent moon or a butterfly shape.

These have been found in caches with Black Rock Concave points and with Clovis points. They were found in the Fenn Cache in northeastern Utah. Even thought they have been found in association with Clovis points, they are most commonly associated with the Great Basin Stemmed Cluster / Western Stemmed Tradition points. They have the same distribution as the Great Basin Stemmed Cluster, not extending into the Clovis distribution.

These knives are primarily found in the Black Rock Desert of northwestern Nevada and into Oregon and California, but may be found in other highlighted areas with decreased frequency.
